Background

Who are we?

Uganda Mathematics Initiatives Projects (UMIP) was established in 2015 by three young women from Mityana district in central Uganda because there was an urgent need to promote and improve mathematics in rural areas, as well as improve mathematics for the girl child. The rural-urban mathematics achievement gap in Uganda is a systemic crisis driven by underfunded schools, teacher shortages, and socioeconomic barriers. 

Our Team

Our team comprises of many professionals from different walks of life, who are committed and dedicated to ensuring that UMIP achieves its goals and objectives. Here are some of the main staff who head different departments

Bernard Kisembo

Executive Director

With a background in Bachelor of Commerce, our ED bridgeS the gap between the high-level vision set by the board of directors OF UMIP and the daily operations executed by the staff, holding primary responsibility for fundraising, financial management, and program strategy

Stella Maris Muwanga

Programs coordinator

With a background in Bachelor of Social Work and Social Administration, our programs coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating specific charitable or community initiatives. She bridges the gap between upper management, field staff, and beneficiaries to ensure projects are executed on time and within budget

Richard Ssesanga

Logistics and Finance manager

With a backgrount in Accounting and Economic Finance, Richard is responsible for managing budgets, and ensuring the seamless delivery of supplies and services. Together, these roles safeguard the organization's resources so field programs can operate without interruption

Justine Nabakka

International Coordinator

With a background in Social Sciences, Justine serves as the vital bridge between the UMIP's headquarter and its global field offices. She oversee cross-border projects, manage partnerships, ensure grant compliance, and facilitate communication between diverse, multicultural teams to maximize the organization's global impact.

Why we established UMIP 

Imbalance and inequality in mathematics

According to the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST), Rural schools struggle to recruit and retain qualified mathematics teachers. In many remote districts, teachers lack deep subject mastery and often rely on rigid, rote teaching strategies that fail to build practical mathematical reasoning.

Research by Busitema University shows that, unlike urban centers, rural schools suffer from a severe lack of instructional materials. Many students lack foundational learning tools like mathematical sets, geometry instruments, and textbooks. 

Economic Policy Research Centre, Socioeconomic Pressures, high poverty rates force many rural families to prioritize immediate survival and agricultural labor over schooling. Seasonal demands often cause severe absenteeism, interrupting mathematical learning continuity. 

Rural students are more likely to navigate overcrowded classrooms, walk long distances to school, and study in facilities lacking basic amenities. These distracting and uncomfortable environments drastically reduce students' focus and motivation. 

Areas of operation

Areas of operation

UMIP Uganda operates in the central Uganda districts of Wakiso, Masaka, Mubende, Luwero, Nakaseke, Kayunga and Nakasongola. We also operate in Busoga region in the districts of Budaka, Mayuge and Bugiri. 

We opeerate school projects, teacher training projects, renovation of infrastructure, organising of mathematics competitions, organising exhibitions, organising outreaches, partnering with different entities, advocacy, schoilarships etc

Our approaches

Active and collaborative learning

Move away from lecture-based teaching to group work, games, sports, and, where possible, technology like GeoGebra to foster problem-solving and engagement.

Teacher training & support

Mentor teachers in "math mastery" approaches—emphasizing conceptual understanding over rote memorization—through workshops, coaching, and teacher self-help groups.

Curriculum & Resource support

Provide access to textbooks, libraries, and revised, context-relevant curricula that incorporate local culture and stories.

Our strategies

Maths first = Excellence!
  • Locally Made Manipulatives: Utilize materials from the immediate environment (stones, sticks, bottles) to create teaching aids that make abstract concepts concrete, particularly for primary learners.
  • Active & Collaborative Learning: Move away from lecture-based teaching to group work, games, sports, and, where possible, technology like GeoGebra to foster problem-solving and engagement.
  • Inclusion & Support: Implement strategies to include girls and children with disabilities, alongside offering psychosocial support for learners.
  • Mentorship & Competitions: Establish math clubs, competitions, and mentorship programs to identify and nurture mathematically gifted students. 

Mission

Raising millions of mathematics and scientific inclined Ugandan students who will grow into adults committed to the development of communities through inventions and productive ventures that will ensure quality of life.
