TRAINING MATHEMATICS TEACHERS IN NORTH BUGANDA REGION

Training rural mathematics teachers is essential to bridge the educational equity gap, improve student achievement, and foster socioeconomic development in underserved areas. Tailored professional development empowers teachers to adopt innovative pedagogies, integrate technology, and use culturally relevant approaches, addressing unique challenges like multi-grade classrooms, limited resources, and teacher retention.

Key Areas of Focus for Training

Integrating ICT in Remote Areas: Training on how to use limited or specific technological tools to improve instruction and improvement of mathematics teacher research skills.

Culturally Responsive Pedagogy: Developing teaching methods that align with the cultural context of rural students.

Curriculum Implementation: Strategies for delivering the required curriculum despite limitations.

Implementing Vocational Education in rural schools

Vocational education in Ugandan secondary schools, often termed ‘’vocationalisation’’ integrates practical, hands-on skills training into the traditional academic curriculum to combat high youth unemployment. Vocationalisation of secondary education has ensured that students leave secondary education equipped with technical and employable skills. Vocational trainings (with a focus on catering and hotel management, furniture works, welding and metal fabrication, motor vehicle mechanics, tailoring, salon,  hairdressing, business management, carpentry, construction, etc). We are implementing Vocation trainings in Lwengo Seed secondary school, Kikyusa secondary school, Mayuge secondary school, Bugiri progressive secondary school, Bamunanika high school, Kiwoko high school

UMIP implements Mathematics projects in schools to achieve the following objectives;

Refurbish and update our library to the standards that can match our vocational training at our school

We want mathematics to be practical, since our school is a vocational secondary school.

We want to prioritize the comprehension of concepts and computing mathematics (computation, concepts, and problem solving for all students)

Given that our school has a composition of Vocational training, our objective is to see students have the opportunity to work on engaging problems, productively struggle, discuss their thinking, and learn from mistakes to develop mathematical proficiency.

Our students participate in the national examinations. Our aim is to ensure students understand and comprehend mathematics, so that the students are able to compute mathematical formulars and figures, understand mathematical concepts and be able to solve mathematical questions.

We want to improve mathematical research at our school by training teachers, providing them with textbooks, computers and internet

We strive to establish a coordinated partnership with a number of stakeholders, including other schools, mathematics training institutions, the local government and funders.

We are currently implementing projects in different schools in Luwero, Lwengo, Nakaseke, Bugiri and Nakasongola

Innovation at heart

Innovation and development of mathematics materials

Foundational & Activity-Based Learning: UMIP IS pushing for hands-on, activity-based materials. For example, our department Education Buganda region is beginning to produce Luganda-translated math books that guide secondary school teachers on how to use everyday classroom materials and games to teach core mathematical concepts.

Student Projects & Science Fairs

Annual Science Fairs: UMIP organizes community science fairs to help learners turn theoretical concepts into practical, problem-solving inventions.

Community Innovations: Student-designed projects often focus on localized needs, such as:

Clean energy stoves, solar food dryers, and charcoal briquettes.

Water purification systems and methane gas generation from animal waste.

Practical engineering, such as hydraulic lifts and security prototypes.
